Non-NCCP Coaching Certification Programs

There are three other Non-NCCP Coaching Certification programs that the AEF recognizes: Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA), the Provincial Vaulting Trainer Program, and the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications (IGEQ).

Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA)

A CanTRA Coach certificate will be granted to Instructors after completion of a set of tasks which they will be required to accomplish with a maximum 3 – year period. Five years experience is required for a part-time CTRI and 3 years if full-time.

The CTRI level that is granted by passing the Provincial Basic Instructor level (and the CanTRA exam) will not be eligible for CanTRA Coach certification.CanTRA Coach will only be granted to those with an Equestrian Canada Competition Coach certificate (English or Western) or International Certification Passport.

Provincial Vaulting Trainer Program (Alberta Equestrian Vaulting Association – AEVA)

The Provincial Vaulting Trainer Program has been established since 1995 and is recognized by Horse Council BC, the Alberta Equestrian Federation, and the Saskatchewan Horse Federation. The Provincial Trainer’s Program concentrates on the practical introduction to coaching in this sport.

The Trainer will be competent in all aspects of safety, skill development, physical preparation of the athlete and the horse and the “role of the Trainer.” For those ready to become certified vaulting coaches, the AEVA offers a weekend evaluation and certification course.

Following the evaluation clinic, candidates will complete a practical and a theoretical examination. Certification as a vaulting coach also requires the candidate to complete the NCCP Equestrian Theory Workshop course, the AEVA lunging course and a standard First Aid course.

International Group for Equestrian Qualifications (IGEQ)

The Equestrian Passport offers easy to carry confirmation of instructor qualifications (useful both at home and overseas) and is available only to those holding eligible qualifications in riding, driving and vaulting through their own national equestrian federation. Therapeutic instructors must hold a Level 1 riding qualification listed on the exams matrix page qualification to be eligible for a passport.

It enables instructors to have their qualifications confirmed and immediately recognized in all IGEQ member countries, thus easing the difficulties of teaching in other parts of the world and reassuring employers. The passport also reassures prospective employers that the holder is properly qualified and to what level.
