Financial assistance for Alberta equine owners affected by wildfire, flood, and other declared emergencies.

Horse owners across Alberta will once again have access to critical financial relief through the Equine Emergency Disaster Fund, with applications opening May 15, 2026.

The fund was created to support Alberta’s equine community during times of crisis, including wildfires, floods, pandemics, or other officially declared states of emergency. Assistance is intended to help offset urgent, disaster-related expenses incurred while protecting and caring for equines.

Who Is Eligible?

Horse owners with equines residing in Alberta at the time of the disaster may be eligible for reimbursement of emergency-related expenses, including:

  • Emergency boarding and evacuation costs
  • Hay, feed, and water
  • Veterinary or medical treatment directly related to the disaster
  • Other essential equine care expenses resulting from the emergency

Important Dates

  • Applications Open: May 15, 2026
  • Application Deadline: October 15, 2026

Applications may be reviewed throughout the season as emergency situations arise.

Application Guidelines

  • One application is permitted per equine location or premises during the intake period.
  • Applicants must provide all required supporting documentation, including receipts and a formal request for assistance.
  • Funding decisions will be reviewed by the Equine Emergency Disaster Fund task force.
  • Funding is limited, and reimbursement amounts may vary depending on available resources and the number of applications received.

Ineligible Expenses

The fund does not cover expenses unrelated to equine emergency care, including:

  • Human accommodations or lodging
  • Human food or personal expenses
  • Lost wages or income
  • Property damage or repairs
  • Routine equine expenses not directly related to the disaster
