Equine Emergency Disaster Fund
The Equine Emergency Disaster Fund provides financial support for expenses directly related to a significant emergency or disaster, including wildfire, flood, pandemic, or situations where a local, provincial, or federal authority has declared a state of emergency and/or evacuation.
This fund is intended to support the health and well-being of equines residing in Alberta at the time of the disaster. It is designed to help horse owners manage urgent, disaster-related costs when the unexpected happens.
The fund is open annually from May 15 to October 15.
Eligible Expenses
Funding may be considered for expenses directly related to the emergency or disaster, including:
- Temporary boarding or evacuation housing for equines
- Hay, feed, and water
- Emergency veterinary or medical expenses for equines
- Transportation costs directly related to equine evacuation or emergency care
- Other essential equine care costs resulting from the disaster
Ineligible Expenses
The fund does not cover expenses that are not directly related to equine care, including:
- Human accommodations, such as hotels or rentals
- Human food, meals, or groceries
- Personal items or household expenses
- Lost income or wages
- Property repairs or replacement
- Routine equine care not caused by the disaster
- Costs incurred outside the eligible funding period

Applications are reviewed based on available funds, eligibility, and the direct connection between the expense and the emergency or disaster. Submission of an application does not guarantee funding.
Applicants may be asked to provide receipts, documentation, or additional information to support their request.
