Become a Certified Coach

Becoming an EC NCCP-certified coach involves four key steps:

• Choose your coaching context (Instructor, CC, CCS)
• Complete your Learn to Ride/Drive certificate (if required)
• Finish your mandatory training (e.g., Make Ethical Decisions, Safe Sport)
• Choose your evaluation format: In-Person or Cohort

Not sure which coaching path is right for you?

The coaching certification process depends on your goals and the type of riders you support.

We’ll help you find the right path based on:

• Discipline (English, Western, Driving, etc.)
• Context (Instructor, Competition Coach, Competition Coach Specialist, Competition Development)
• Your experience level

Coach Status and Coaching Certification work together — but they are not the same thing.

• Coach Status = Your license and screening (Safe Sport, insurance, background check)
• Coaching Certification = Your lifelong NCCP credential (after training and evaluation)

Both are required to coach in EC programs like Rookie Riders* and Learn to Ride & Drive*.

Once you’re ready, you can choose how to complete your final evaluation:

• Cohort Evaluation:
  • Online group format with weekly sessions, coach developer support, built-in training modules, and video-based submissions.
• In-Person Evaluation:
  • One-day assessment at a designated facility for candidates who are confident and prepared.

Both formats have specific requirements, fees, and schedules — choose the path that works best for your learning style and availability.

Equestrian-specific NCCP courses help coaches plan safe, effective lessons and support athlete development through all stages of the LTED model.

• Long-Term Equestrian Development*
• Analyzing Beginner Performance*
• Plan an Equestrian Practice*
• Design & Manage an Equestrian Sport Program

* Note: The first three courses listed above are built into the Cohort Evaluation format — no separate registration or fees required.
