Annual Provincial Awards

The Annual Provincial Awards shine a spotlight on the outstanding individuals, horses, and stables who go above and beyond in Alberta’s equestrian world. They recognize the achievements and positive impact made by those who inspire, lead, and embody the spirit of our vibrant horse community.

Nomination Categories

Each award category celebrates individuals or facilities that embody the qualities outlined in the criteria below. Nominees may be recognized for a single outstanding achievement or for their ongoing, meaningful contributions to Alberta’s equine community. When submitting a nomination, we encourage you to paint a vivid picture—details matter when showcasing the true impact of our community champions.

Recipients are presented with their awards at Horse Expo Canada in Red Deer.

Nominations open October 1 and close November 30 each year.

The recipient does not need to be directly involved with horses on a daily basis; what matters most is the significant and lasting impact they have made on the equestrian industry through their volunteer service.

Outstanding Equine Support Personnel

They are reliable, professional, positive, and knowledgeable, consistently ensuring that horses remain healthy, happy, and well cared for. With proactive dedication and strong industry expertise, they contribute immeasurably to the smooth operation of barns, competitions, and events.

Recipients in this category may serve in roles such as groom, stable-hand, farrier, massage therapist, veterinarian, or similar positions. They are recognized for their extraordinary horsemanship and specialized skills that elevate the equestrian community as a whole.

Outstanding Stable/Facility

The recipient of this award is a current AEF stable or facility member who consistently upholds the highest standards of horse care and welfare. On their property, the safety of both horse and rider is always the top priority.

Their facility is impeccably maintained, clean, and secure, adhering to proper biosecurity protocols and reflecting best practices in stable management. They employ knowledgeable staff, foster a safe and positive environment, and ensure respectful, clear communication with clients.

This recipient demonstrates ethical business practices, effective risk management, and a commitment to excellence in every aspect of equine care. They are recognized for creating an environment where horses and riders can thrive, and for exemplifying what it means to provide outstanding equine facilities and welfare.

Outstanding Equine

Learn More

This award recognizes a living equine—horse, pony, donkey, mule, or other—of any age, that has accomplished something truly extraordinary within their discipline or activity. The recipient has made a significant impact on the equine community, either through an achievement that goes “above and beyond” or by overcoming exceptional challenges.

The equine does not need to be a competition horse. They may be a trusted school horse who has touched countless riders, an equine partner who has achieved remarkable goals, one who has triumphed against incredible odds, or a competitor who has reached the highest levels of success. What matters most is the lasting impact they have made on others.

To be eligible, the equine must reside in Alberta and be alive at the time of nomination (posthumous nominations are not accepted). Nominations must include the current owner’s name and contact information. Nominations for Outstanding Horse must not be made by the current owner. Please note: equines owned by AEF staff or board members—including lesson or facility horses—are not eligible for this award.
