Journeys Therapeutic Riding Society (JTRS) is a registered charity that operates a therapeutic riding program for persons with physical and/or developmental disabilities and those identified as at risk youth.
Therapeutic riding is an activity designed to assist individuals with special needs to experience physical, psychological, social and emotional benefits from horseback riding. Riding a trained horse gently and rhythmically moves the rider's trunk and pelvis in a manner like that of the human walk, with resulting improvement on the individual's core strength, balance, flexibility, strength and control. The relationship with the horse leads to increased rider confidence, independence and self-esteem. The contact with the instructors and volunteers increases the rider's social skills throughout the program tenure.
The Society consists of Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors, Assistant Riding Instructors, a team of trained Volunteers and is managed through a group of Volunteer Board Members.
