The Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF) is pleased to congratulate the Northern Trails Riding Club (NTRC) of Didsbury, Alberta, on receiving funding through AEF’s Club Funding Program. This support recognizes the club’s outstanding commitment to rider development, community engagement, and the promotion of safe, inclusive equestrian opportunities.

Supporting clubs that strengthen Alberta’s equestrian community

AEF strives to provide funding, when available, to all categories of members—including clubs, individuals, and industry partners. Funding approval is based on alignment with the AEF’s Vision, Mission, and Values, and applications are reviewed fairly through a formal submission process.

Through this program, AEF supports:

  • Club educational clinics and events
  • Club scholarships or bursaries related to equine activities
  • Club board member development
  • Club facility improvements
  • Events open to all AEF members
  • Programs and projects that contribute to the broader equine community

“We’re proud to support clubs like Northern Trails that embody the true spirit of Alberta’s equestrian community,” said Sonia Dantu, Executive Director of the Alberta Equestrian Federation. “Their commitment to education, inclusivity, and the joy of riding reflects the values that make our province’s horse community so strong. Clubs like NTRC play a vital role in providing accessible opportunities for riders to grow, connect, and thrive.”

Celebrating Northern Trails Riding Club

Founded in 1982, the Northern Trails Riding Club (NTRC) is a non-profit, grassroots open horse show club that welcomes riders of all ages, skill levels, and disciplines. Each year, NTRC hosts four open shows from June to September at the Didsbury Agricultural Grounds, featuring classes in English, western, ranch, and gymkhana.

More than just a show organization, NTRC fosters a vibrant and inclusive community where riders can learn, build confidence, and share their love for horses. The club’s unique progressive category system ensures that competitors ride within their appropriate age and skill levels, promoting fairness, safety, and sportsmanship.

Investing in rider development

In April 2025, NTRC hosted two successful spring clinics focused on skill development and show readiness:

A ranch trail clinic at Dragonfly Ranch near Water Valley, led by clinician Wendy Johnston, which welcomed 10 riders and focused on horsemanship, obstacles, and maneuvers specific to ranch trail competition.

A showmanship and horsemanship clinic at Coulee 6 Equestrian near Carstairs, led by clinician Mairi Keith, where 12 participants gained valuable instruction on class-specific techniques, show ring etiquette, and confidence building.

These clinics exemplify NTRC’s commitment to accessible education, rider growth, and community development—values that align perfectly with AEF’s mission to promote safe, inclusive, and enriching equestrian experiences across Alberta.

AEF applauds the Northern Trails Riding Club for its dedication to Alberta’s equestrian community and its efforts to create opportunities that empower riders to learn, compete, and thrive.
